    News on the street is that Jeffrey Epstein convinced moot to set up /pol/. Of a bunch of silly geographical comments related to the Epstein affair, that's one of the less expected.

    edit: I've also had just read that due to inflation, the prices of luxury yachts, horses, and caviar are all going up. Makes me think inflation is about to randomly go down soon.

    Or to be more exact, in 2018 a bunch of guys tried to sell a presidential pardon, which, it turns out, is a serious crime. From what I can gather their offer was that, for a bribe, they'd arrange things so that the prezzie would be slipped a pardon to sign, although it's amusing to imagine it as some sort of heist. Also, the porn thing is not directly related, as it was just one of them in what I imagine was a side job. But again, quite a party they've got gathered there.

    I remember an article speculating that that's how interin prez Ramon J. Velásquez ended up pardoning a drug dealer for no known reason, that a secretary "accidentally" let the pardon form slip in among less important stuff until he signed it. The article also speculated that similar things must've happened regularly.

    Meanwhile me, I've been thinking it's gonna be a while since my next post, but just today I learned of this thing:
    PMC Ryodan (ЧВК Рёдан) is a subculture primarily present in Russia and Ukraine. It is characterized by groups of teenagers, often anime fans, who adopted the name as an ironic reference to the Wagner Group, a Russian private military contractor (PMC). The name "Ryodan" originates from a group of thieves in the anime series Hunter x Hunter. Members of the subculture are often identified by their attire, which includes black hoodies featuring a white spider symbol.

    So, meanwhile in Russia - and as we know, everything in Russia is more hardcore.
    The first major online community associated with the group appeared on the Russian social media platform VK in September 2022, and it reached 190,000 users. It was then blocked by Roskomnadzor on February 28, 2023.

    I'm trying to come up with some sort of Russian reversal joke.
    The subculture's existence gained media attention on February 22, 2023 following a physical fight at the Aviapark shopping mall in Moscow. According to accounts from Ryodan members, the conflict initiated after they were confronted about their clothing by individuals with right-wing and white supremacist affiliations. Following the incident, a video of the altercation was shared online, accompanied by a caption that contained hostile language, contributing to its rapid spread.[2]

    After the Aviapark incident, law enforcement increased their presence in shopping malls across Russia. This led to over 500 detentions of teenagers who were assumed to be associated with Ryodan.

    I wanted to come up with something like "in Russia dweebs are beating up the jocks", but it looks more like the gov't is fine with thugs beating up random kids all over again.
    Law enforcement in St. Petersburg informed detained teenagers that PMC Ryodan is a creation of "Western intelligence services," framing the subculture within Russia"s "confrontation with the West." Similarly, Ukrainian authorities, including the Kyiv Police, have attributed the group to "Russian propagandists," alleging an "informational-psychological operation"

    Because of course everyone thinks it's a psy-op by the other guys, when it's just the weaboos doing weaboo things.

    I mean, I expected I'm grumpy and hateful enough not to mind the idea of weaboos getting the proper treatment, but turns out I do. Either I'm getting older or that's just excessive.

    It's the Donut Day (ie. Fat Thursday), when everyone is gorging themselves on donuts, so supermarkets are one-upping each other with donut sales. I'm told it's they went for even cheaper a year or two ago.

    At the same time, wood pellets are expensive since a lot of that stuff had been sent to Ukraine, which had a Putin-related heating crisis. Wood pellets are a popular fuel as they can be produced locally from locally sourced wood, you can claim it's a renewable energy source since trees grow back, and therefore there's a lot of vested interests in it.

    I can't speak for quality of Lidl donuts, but the common opinion is that you shouldn't go to a supermarket if you want a passably good donut.

    So, you guys might have heard of the parliamentary elections in Hungary. As of now, it looks like the anti-Viktor Orban opposition will get over two thirds of parliamentary seats, granting them constitutional majority. If everything unfolds as it appears it will right now, Orban will lose his grip on Hungary after sixteen years of rule marked with democracy backsliding by about any respectable standard of it and comparatively cringeworthy levels of corruption.

    The victorious party is a big-tent, mostly centre and centre-right coalition that is nonetheless pro-EU and anti-Orban.

    In spite of many warnings about the possibility that the ruling party will try various plots and dirty tricks to stay in power, Orban has already congratulated the winner. That does not exclude the option they will try to pull something off, but it's a good start.

    Perhaps the biggest achievement of Viktor Orban is that he made Hungary into a darling of the global right. Hungary, a rather mid-tier regional power, has become an exemplar of "anti-woke", "illiberal democracy", kind of state that righties promoted as a role model as far away as the US.

    Also, Wikipedia tells me there were presidential elections in Benin and general elections in Peru, but I'm gonna be honest and admit I've got less to say about them.

    I don't know this Eckhardt Tolle guy the smallest bit, so hard to say. Apart from that - well, who knows. People I know personally don't seem to fit this trend, although me and a bunch of others are deathly afraid of causing a social misunderstanding, making others disappointed in them, so on and so forth. That does count as paranoid by some ways of looking at it. People I don't know personally... well, I'm still concerned by recent burst of stories about attacks on Ukrainians, so I'm inclined towards it. Plus, we like to think ourselves as petty, nasty and vile.

    And as we're still on Czech things, they've got medieval-themed restaurant that for some reason used the seal of Wyoming for decoration.

    I mean, do you remember that story about Nicholas Cage on the cover of Serbian biology textbook? Well, looks like the new in-thing is "why is the seal of the state of Wyoming on the ceiling of Czech medieval-themed restaurant".

    My guess is they googled for nice stained glass pictures and somehow this was the first result, because the only other reason for that which I can come up with is it used to be a cowboy-themed reastaurant before, and what are the odds. It's not even like they don't know what they've got, they painted over that circling text. But only that, it's so trashy they called it a day and left the banners on the columns in. And the guy in charge of the restaurant is supposed to have a diploma in history. That's the level of trashy-ness that does a circle around my Eastern Central European aesthetic sense until it ends up back at awesome.

    While in itself it would have been unusual, what makes me post is that an article on the cougar contained a link to an older article about a cougar at large, dated to a month before. And that makes me wonder. Just how many of them are around, if two separate cougars are spotted in the span of a month, and how do they get here?
