ANIME AND CARTOONS ARE DIFFERENT YOU GUYZ/MANGA AND COMICS ARE DIFFERENT YOU GUYZ

edited 2011-07-21 03:46:30 in General
No...no they aren't. They are the same thing!

Trying to say that Tom and Jerry is a different medium from Bleach is like saying that bread and le pain are different!

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Not on a technical level, they're not.

On a cultural level, including visual techniques used and common cultural nuances, they are indeed different.

While they both might be bread, the Western equivalent would be white bread while the Japanese would be wheat bread.

They are certainly both bread, there are differences.

Now leave and take your weird food analogies with you.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
They tend to be narratively different.
  • Cartoons are a kid's show. Anime is a teen's show.
  • not sure if serious
  • I listen to anything Kamina Treize tells me.
  • I'm not sure if CommandoDude is serious...
  • While they both might be bread, the Western equivalent would be white bread while the Japanese would be wheat bread.

... so that means that Anime is healthier than western cartoons, then?

    Yes.

They are different but the same. For example, manga and like media in the East covers many genres from action, comedy, romance while comics in the West are dominated by superhero titles, but have all kinds of genres as well. For anime and cartoons, it is the same. Anime covers a board range of genres while Western cartoons are dominated by outlandish comedy, but several Western series have been known for action and engaging storylines.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't even compare Tom And Jerry to most western cartoons either.

A:TLA is a better alternative to Bleach, at the very least.
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
Eh?  I thought anime was considered kids stuff in Japan.  Manga, on the hand, doesn't have that stigma.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
Well, I don't know if it's considered "kids stuff" but there is a whole lot more mature anime than there are mature American cartoons.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
In general, Manga/Anime is treated the same way comic books are over here in the west. Generally considered kids stuff, and anything that isn't is for nerds.

^^ Yeah but that stuff tends to be on later hours of the night.

The point is, Japan isn't some anime wonderland.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
^I didn't think it was, after all, they have live-action shows as well, but I thought it was considered equal to live-action media.
  • ^ Not from what I've read. Apparently manga is pretty mainstream in Japan, but anime is still looked down upon in some capacity. I'm not sure how strong the attitude is compared to the U.S. and cartoons, though.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
If that's the case, I wonder why anime is looked down upon. It doesn't make sense being how a lot of anime is adapted from manga.

^^^ I've been told by people that have lived in Japan for time and they all seem to agree anime in general in Japan is considered for kids in Japan.  One guy even said that much of it wish fulfillment.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
I see. Wish fulfillment... I guess that's a small part of why I like anime but also I find most American dramas boring.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Of course manga and comics are different, one of them is read in a completely different direction.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I'm just tired of hearing this kind of argument.

"Cartoons and anime are both drawings made to appear to move. Obviously, they're the same thing."

"Benadryl and Tylenol are both pills made to be swallowed. Obviously, they're the same thing."

Remember that when you take tylenol for allergies and benadryl for headaches.
