Anime Filler Is Bad

  • ^^^ No, not everything from the nineties was automatically good, just all the cartoons.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't mind Dantes' rants, mostly because it's a nice break from having to deal with people who act like anything from the 90's was automatically good.

    is this a thing

    since when

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Nickelodeon was a cesspit. Disney Afternoon needs more love though.

^It is, no matter how much I wish it wasn't.

You've seriously never seen one of my "cartoons were better in the 1980s" rants?

    Actually, no I haven't.

    They basically amount to:

    1. The afformentioned self-contained-episodes vs. story arcs, arguing the former is better because it allows you to pop in any episode you want and just enjoy it instead of having to dedicate yourself to a series.

    2. Despite what revisionist history tells you, a lot of eighties cartoons came dangerously close to breaking the Animation Age Ghetto. The 1990s on up pretended to do this but are actually mock-rebels only pretending to fight while actually being significantly nerfed.

    3. Cartoons had better--or at least more distinct--soundtracks back then. You could tell cartoons apart just by their music. Nowadays everything seems generic (though to be honest, we're getting better).

    4. The best characters of the eighties behaved like people. It largely depends on the show but a lot of characters today behave like stereotypes.

    5. I personally prefer hand-drawn animation over digital art because I feel like it conveys more uniqueness and personality, while more streamlined art makes everything look kinda mass-produced.

    6. Say what you will about "thirty minute toy commercials" but at least nearly everything on TV in the eighties was actually from the eighties. The 1990s was a moocher that coasted on the creations of previous generations, and the 2000s largely continued that trend.

That's pretty much it. I thought of giving this a more thorough overview in my blog but it wasn't until just now that I had hammered down the main points. Thanks!

And god dammit guys quit moving so fast while I'm trying to type. I press "post" and I'm on a completely different page, sheesh!
  • You can change. You can.
I mean, I kinda like Hey, Arnold! and Gargoyles is good stuff, but...

    really

all i remember from the nineties is this

    And it was rather average.
  • I don't care, Malk! I just mistook your semi-identical twin sister, she's who I love, not you! I'll do anything to prove it to her, even if it means killing you and my own unborn child!

Dantes: You mind shortening that to one to three sentences?

@MoeDantes: Is that more about nineties cartoons, or 2000s cartoons?

Gargoyles was a part of the Disney Afternoon. It needs more love for that alone.

And Duck Tales. And Rescue Rangers. And Darkwing Duck. And Aladdin.

Seriously. Watch them. Forget this 'animation trying to be for adults' stuff. Those last four just try to be the best kids shows they can, even if the Aladdin cartoon had more pop culture jokes than it needed.

^^What you don't know is my twin sister is actually a robot designed by me to test your love for a twin sister of mine! And you failed!
  • Aaaand now I don't hate you anymore. :3
  • You can change. You can.
    Darkwing duck is the shit.

-never watched any of those shows-
  • «Doctor Who is all about the filler. And it is amazing. Just sayin'.

In fact, the episode that most people claim is the best is an episode that doesn't even matter in the arc of the season. (Blink)

Filler is not bad as long as the myth arc is not the center of it all, basically. »
Doctor Who is different from anime with filler in that it's the same writing staff writing both sorts of episodes, though.

    Eighties cartoons were better.

They were original, hand-drawn, had great soundtracks and surprisingly compelling plots and characters.

I think the longer version of this rant was better.

@MoeDantes: Is that more about nineties cartoons, or 2000s cartoons?

It's kind of really about both, since I don't really see a lot of difference. I think some of my criticisms may be more valid of 2000s than 1990s though.

^That's it? Pfffft, that was hardly a rant. That's barely even a complaint! I'm disappointed in you, Dantes.
  • You can change. You can.
Because he shortened the whole deal for you
  • No, a true rantist can make even the shortest rants a powerful piece of enraged art. Quite frankly, I just don't think Dantes has it in him to post a true rant.

And to think this is what I was missing out on. I would've had more fun getting smacked around by a drunken schizophrenic hobo. >:[

    >I think some of my criticisms may be more valid of 2000s than 1990s though.

They are. For one thing, they didn't have Flash back then for cartoons.

And as for soundtracks, you've got Rugrats's off-beat keyboard tones (by the main guy from Devo, no less), Doug's farting beatbox doo's, Hey Arnold's smooth jazz flavor, Ren and Stimpy's...I don't know what, among many others.

Though even I'll admit that none of those can touch lay a finger this:

  • No need to worry, Malk. It was a purely platonic hate, I assure you. :3

Dude, I can't rage anymore. I managed to find a copy of Earthbound to call my own. Who can be upset over freaking cartoons when you have Earthbound?

Let the world burn, I'm going to beat up some New-Age Retro Hippies.

    Anyone who has played Earthbound.

Earthbound is just a fairly good Dragon Quest clone, with silly monster designs and setting.  From what I played of it, it is not as good as several actual Dragon Quest games.
  • Oh, suck it up you pansy, you'll be fine.

The appeal is in the selfaware, hilarious script.
