When I assume things I know are common knowledge
I tend to do this no matter how obscure the item in question is. Roger Corman, Suda 51, Derrida, I assume you all know who they are.
It's like reverse hipster syndrome. If I know about it, obviously you must too.

I'm always taken aback, for instance, when I have to explain the difference between a U.S. Route and and Interstate to people who are older than me and have been driving for decades.
@OP: I knew about Roger Corman, but not Suda 51 or Derrida (This Derrida?)

Technically, reverse hipster syndrome would be "if you know about it, then I probably don't know about it", if hipster syndrome is "if I know about it, then you probably don't know about it".
I tend to suffer from just plain never knowing which to expect. My parents yell at me for "starting an explanation in the middle" and my professors yell at me for "wasting my time". I suppose the only solution is to try to phrase things in a way that encourages people to ask if they don't know without insulting their intelligence.
So there.
