    DonZabu,

I think part of the reason why being unable to defend your opinions can be annoying is because it can be kind of self-perpetuating. While there are definitely certain times when you simply have not learned something yet that you plan to learn later, I think that plenty of times not being able to justify your opinions can discourage you from actually getting to know more.

I feel like part of the problem there can be that conversations become very heated and people have little tolerance for someone who is not as well-versed in a subject as they are. As a result, I think those who have problems justifying their own opinions because of a lack of expertise and such tend to step out of discussions that could help them learn more. Of course, sometimes those discussions are pretty unproductive and if they are not respectful, they may not be much to be gained from them anyway. I hope was not too unclear there by the way.

I guess sometimes there are opinions that are based on feelings that are pretty tough to explain anyway (stuff like tastes, especially when it comes to something like what you find disgusting).

LouieW, do you have a posting template that you use each time? Like one of those ECR-format cheat sheets from high school? Every time I see one of your posts, it's almost always 2-4 paragraphs, with the last one merely being a conclusive sentence.

You only need to defend it if somebody attacks it.

    I like Durex.

    Durex is Perverted bullshit.

I am not a pervert, I just like Durex.
  • I've been there.

I hate retaining any sort of opinions that seem flawed, myself. I try to refine or drop them if they are, somehow.
  • Happens with this one all the time. By now, this one is not even sure if she should.

Thing is, very few people really construct  their opinions from scratch. Most of the  time people have their  opinion, and then look for the justifications for it.

(sigh) This  one been known to come  up with some good  and defensible justifications. Which this one quite sincerely believes. However, it does not change  the fact that these justifications only came in  place after she's already formed her opinion, and so said opinion is not, in fact, based on them.

The thing is, you should be able to justify your own opinions to yourself, and not have to convince everyone else that they are right, since no matter how many good justifications you make, all will be lost because they don't have to accept the justifications at all.

^^ They can still count. You aren't sure why you have an opinion, then realize later on that this is why. The justifications just didn't have a proper way to be described before that moment

What's worse is being unable to defend or justify your opinions but getting really defensive about them all the same.
