Slapstick anime trying to take itself serious

edited 2011-08-22 01:27:14 in General
CRIMINAL SCUM!
Or vice versa. Serious anime that can never just focus on being serious and feels the need to insert those dumb comedy routines. Boke and Tsukkomi routines are NOT funny in supposedly serious or deep anime.

I'm looking at you FMP and Linebarrels of Iron. You crap.

  • I can't think of many serious works of fiction that don't insert comedy or long-running comedies that don't at least have pastiches of poignant moments.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Humour is necessary. The vast majority of people use humour as a social tool, whether interpersonally or intrapersonally, and some people just have slapstick moments. Without humour, you don't have a well-rounded character.

A lot of fantasy novels fall prey to a lack of humour, which dehumanises the characters and makes the books uninteresting as a result.
  • Nononono. There's a difference between "Humor" and "Slapstick"

    Humor is refined.

    Slapstick is 'random funny'

Jon Stewart is a humorous "news" show, that can take itself seriously.

Steven Colbert is a slapstick parody, that does not, nor should it try to, take itself seriously.
  • Wait, I thought slapstick was generally the same thing as physical comedy. If that's true, a very small bit of Colbert is slapstick.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

That is not what these words mean at all.
  • You can change. You can.
Slapstick is a type of comedy involving exaggerated violence and activities which may exceed the boundaries of common sense.

Humour or humor (...) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement.
  • I think what Mr. Commando is going for is this. the type of humour he's deriding is the type of humour that's easy to grab onto.

I.E. Situational 1-time humour that is added for nothing else but to amuse the audience.

    That's my take on it.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
What you are thinking of is "audacity", not slapstick.
  • I will add that I understand very loosely what he means, but I feel that drama and comedy need to be a good ole blend of soup.

If you want one to overpower the other, you need to do in a good way, otherwise the other just sticks out too much.

Take for example this anime I'm watching, It's very dramatic, and yet, It's very comedic as well. because of how the comedy is presented though, it doesn't overpower the drama, It instead submits itself to the the drama at hand, like a faithful and ever-working servant that wishes nothing more than to serve it's master.
  • You can change. You can.
Drama and Comedy work better when they purposefully contrasting and the drama actually helps the comedy and the comedy helps the drama.

Buffy comes to mind. There were moments when the show mocked its characters pathos and suffering (Giles' laugh at the end of season 6) and other moments when the show took what other shows would mock (Like Xander's suffering through simple minutae of life, like being relatively incompetent) and exploited them for drama.

I haven't watched a movie that didn't at least try to be funny in a while. I think a blend is good.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Horror and Comedy, or Suspense and Comedy tend to work out strangely well together.
  • $80+ per session
The former because of physical comedy and playing with expectations. Also because fear and laughter come from the same place.
  • You can change. You can.
The former because Shaun of the Fucking Dead, baby.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Also Evil Dead 2.

I preferred Zombieland, but they are both good.
  • You can change. You can.
    Also Evil Dead 2.

Meh. Evil Dead 2 sucked as an horror film. And it also was kinda lame as a comedy. But it was good as an exploitation action film.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I'll agree it's not that scary, but I love a good deal of the comedy.

Of course at seven it frightened the crap out of me...

Besides Funny Games, what's a good suspensedy?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
How, specifically, is it different from a horror comedy?
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
    Drama and comedy...CASTLE PIMPING!
  • $80+ per session
Uh...Well, there is a fine line between the difference of horror and suspense.
  • You can change. You can.
    NO FUCK CASTLE

    *Runs away*
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
You know it has a good balance of drama and comedy, U NOU EET!
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I've heard the characters are great, but the actual mysteries blow.
  • You can change. You can.
    I NOU NOTHING

But seriously, I like some of Castle episodes, and the humor is pretty fun. I just wish it didn't have so many of the trappings and shit that normal procedurals do. They annoy me enugh for me to not binge the show. I can still watch it whenever I'm bored or stuff, though.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Does Nathan Fillion make lots of puns?

He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
Its realism! A real mystery writer would not be able to uncover killers as fast as a good policeman could! So they dumb it down!/fan-wank.

What you call procedural shows trappings I call pasta, I love to eat pasta./Me watches more procedural than you. Although quantity is not the same as quality, I know.

Not as much as you'd think, but yes, he does puns and really funny wordplay.
  • You can change. You can.
I dunno, man. I just don't like when they solve a case in one episode. Having my mother ranting about criminal cases for two months pretty much made me learn that that's never the case.

For some reason, I think horror is more supernatural and the unexplained, while suspense doesn't always want you to fear.
