Big Fucking Swords

Is there any situation where they actually work in media without it being somewhat ridiculous? Heck, I accidentally drew a sword design too big and tried to avoid fixing it by saying that the mystical metal it is made of is super light (It's a one handed blade the size of a human. Due to the unique design (think weaponized set square), I can't make it two handed), but the sheer size makes it... Hard to weild anyways So it led me to wondering if there is ANY situation where a big fucking sword works (And I mean big compared to a weilder. If the sword is huge to a human but is weilded by a giant, it doesn't count)

Comments

  • Berserk.  It takes into account the fact that the sword is, in fact, really fucking big, and makes it work the way that a sword that fucking big should.  It works more on the fact that the sword is very heavy and crushes it's opponents rather than making clean slices or stabs.  And the guy who weilds it has gone through hell his whole life (both metaphorically and literally), and is really frigging strong, so it's reasonable that he'd be able to weild it.

The biggest swords, zweihanders, could reach about six feet in length. They were mostly used for hacking apart pike formations and striking aside defenses; the nature of European fighting techniques means that your attack is also your defense, so zweihander users would achieve both self-preservation and victory by striking with initiative.

That's the only one I can think of.

So basically, when it reaches those sizes it becomes less a sword and more a massive club if you want to use it right?

I think Soul Calibur's Siegfried is pretty interesting that his success depends on how much momentum you can keep thus if you stop and have to swing the sword again you get raped by Amy's bladed twig.

I don't know how realistic this is, but I like it.

    That reminds me...

I forget who the sword enthusiast on IJBM is. Who are they so I can ask for help with the sword design and how it would most likely be used in battle?

One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^^ Soooort of. It's kinda complex in some ways.

Swords have various advantages. The biggest one is versatility, because a sword has three ways to wound:

    - Cutting, or your basic strike.
    - Thrusting.
    - Draw-cutting, which is when one draws the blade across an adversary's body to cut rather than striking from distance.

So the sword being bladed is still a highly relevant element of its use. While the initial force from the cutting strike will be pretty massive, follow-up techniques can still be used which take advantage of the weapon's particular characteristics. Zweihanders also have spiked secondary crossguards and a leather-bound section of the blade directly above the hilt. This suggests that, like the more conservative longswords, a significant part of their use was to do with strikes from either of the crossguards, almost using the sword like a staff at times. The size of a zweihander, along with its other features, also suggests that it was used in half-sword plenty of the time for both defensive and offensive purposes.

So while the brute force impact was important, it wasn't the whole story.

^... and if you didn't guess, that would be me. Fire away. xD

^Any commentary on how realistic the Soul Calibur example is?

I will not be surprised at 'not at all'.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Not at all, mostly because a zweihander is going to kill you dead unless you're in plate armour, and even then you're gonna feel it.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    On the Sigfried example:

There's a couple of things wrong with that. One is just how tired you'd be after swinging that thing around non-stop. The other is that, well, bone and such is bot easy to cut through, so any time you make contact at all, your blade is slowing down and losing momentum.

^^I figured as much. Oh well. I still like it as a fighting game mechanic.

    Well Madass, I PMd you
  • Malk: By Soul Calibur 4 though, Soul Calibur itself has basically no edge to it whatsoever. It's really a huge-ass club.

Yeah, but they're all pretty much just glorified boffer weapons. =P
