Premises (of stories/movies/shows/etc.) that exploit difference between sexes

Was just looking at a banner ad on TV Tropes for Tim Allen's "Last Man Standing".  Apparently the advertised premise is that Allen's main character is "a man's man" in "a world of women".

I like the alliteration as much as the next person, but...what's the big deal about interacting with a large number of people of the opposite sex?

I think stories (Y THE LAST MAN) where a person of a single gender (Y THE LAST MAN) is forced into this (Y THE LAST MAN) can sometimes be interesting.

    X THE LAST WOMAN.

I doubt a Tim Allen film will have the same sophistication though.

    It's a show, but point.

Okay, maybe it's just that I don't really care as much for this genre as do other people.
  • Y The Last Man still annoyed me in certain things. Like the modeling industry suddenly being out of business because there were no men to impress.

IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.

What would happen to the modeling industry then?
  • Well, while it might have problems due to funding or who knows what else, but the actual concept is not entirely about attracting men. A lot of it has to do with other woman.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Yeah, a lot of people assume that attractiveness exists only to attract mates. It's not like that; it's about presenting yourself to the same sex as well.
  • If anything, the Modeling industry would shut down for entirely different purposes, you know, that one big thing...
  • You can change. You can.

You have to admit, though, that a lot of men buy them Victoria's Secret catologues.

The thing is, just because men are not the whole market does not mean that they are not a significant part of the market. And sometimes, a significant part of the market does not even need to represent a big percentage. Just a meaningful one.

Juan: Unless ALL of the businesses collapsed for the same reason, that doesn't hold water.

Not all businesses fell. But from what I remember, all industries did and everyone had to start from zero with small businesses except for a very few exceptions. Of course, like always, it must be beared in mind that we don't see the rest of the world and how it fares at least until we're halfway down the story, so we don't know if the whole modelling industry is down. All we know is that "Wilhelmina" is down

Also, the model that Yorick meets doesn't mention anything as to why did her model contract fell down. --shrug--

And I don't see what's particular sexist about that. I never even implied something like "All men buy Victoria's Catalogue". I said that a lot of men do. And that wouldn't be exactly a lie, would it? And even if it wasn't just stuff like that, who says that modelling magazines just rely on aesthetically pleasing work?

I always thought the whole 'fashion industry collapsing' thing was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek.
  • But Victoria's Catalogue is one small part of the modeling business as a whole. Sure, that part my collapse because a lack of men, but plenty of other fashion mags would not be falling out of business for the same reason.

    Many are not underwear mags.

It isn't just about the magazines having sexy pictures AHR.

It's also about what fashion and beauty magazines do for women. It gives them advice on how to attract me, either intentionally or not. Without men, a lot of women probably aren't gonna have the drive to wear more appealing clothing, do their nails as much, etc.

No, the fashion industry and mentality does not work that way. A large degree of it has NOTHING to do with impressing men -- it has to do with impressing other females, or the populace as a whole.
  • In my headcanon, the fashion industry fell because of the sudden lack of sassy gays.

Victoria's Secret was just an example, really. And, like I said, not all of them were necessarily aesthetically pleasing work. But it is appealing.

Also, remeber all those events, designers, etc etc. At least half of the men in there were male.

Also, also, as Malk pointed out, we're taking a joke too seriously.

But the fact of the matter is, that a lot of things fell down in Y because men were not there and were half the world's population. It's what happens when you snuff half of the world's economical and political base. The rest falls.
  • Well, as I said, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell for funding reasons, or something like that, but the idea it went solely down because "with men gone there was no one else to impress" is ludicrous.

I always view fashion like I view religion. If it helps, go ahead and follow popular trends but it's better to find something that works for you.
  • "Hey it's a joke AHR' It doesn't matter that it's sexist" ~tears hair out~

Hmmph, It's funny that the slow-witted men are the only ones trying to defend this insult to intelligence.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I never made a comment on whether it's sexist or not, only that I felt reactions were treating it as if it was meant to be taken seriously in-story.

Whether it's sexist or not is honestly a question I don't want to get into as I know very little about the fashion industry.

Wow, okay. No need to call us "slow-witted".
  • You can change. You can.
Well, it matters because the joke is made by a character with a tendency towards that kind of joke. And he does get groans and at least one punch by 355, I think. Not because the reason in-universe was because there were no men anymore.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Welp, I'm done with this thread! G'night everybody!
  • What's the matter? Can't take a joke?

It's hard to gauge what is and isn't a joke on the internet. Everyone knows that.

And since you have clearly vocalized your opinion on sexism in the past, combined with the fact that lately, you have been more serious than usual, I'm going to naturally assume that you were being serious when you meant to, basically, call us "stupid".

    tl;dr: I wouldn't put it past you.
