I didn't say I can't take a joke. I'm just saying I really can't tell if it was a joke or not. It didn't sound like one, at all, and I can't read your mind through the internet.
  • ...I think both sides need to calm down.

You can't justify something as "it's a joke"

You can justify it with the execution, and explanation of how it happened, and if it was supposed to be stupid, but saying it's a joke does not cover it.

And, CC, deep breaths. Deep breaths.
  • You can change. You can.
Mister Fillion! Speak for me, please!

    What I thought...

Also, the fact that AHR says "And, CC, deep breaths. Deep breaths." helps prove that you are obviously angry, whether you are making jokes or not.

Even if it was a joke, calling someone "slow-witted" for literally no reason is an easy way to look like...well, a bitch.

I can take a joke, it didn't look like you were able to do so quite as well.

It might be a good idea to take a break from the internet if jokes cause you to become buttmad.

^^^&^^I don't think you guys are in a remotely higher position. You seem to be fanning the flames here. I understand you are probably annoyed at CC, but it might be better to withdraw from the debate yourselves.
  • edited 2011-10-08 12:37:19
^^^The point was that it was supposed to be an attack on the just joking justification.

I'd be lying if I said people getting unreasonably mad wasn't entertaining.

^People are posting too fast, I think there's a chance my post was timed wrong.

Whatever. I still think insulting someone for no reason is a bad way to swing an argument.

^^Because you can't be arsed to understand her argument? I would have thought better of you.

You would have thought better of me? Horrible move.

    Also, her original quote:

"Hey it's a joke AHR' It doesn't matter that it's sexist"

doesn't even work because no one said anything like that at all.
  • You can change. You can.
You can't justify something as "it's a joke"

Admittedly, my memory is failing, because it's one of those details I'm not so certain about, but isn't the person who gives us said info mentioned to be...erm...not exactly non-sexist? As in, a member of the amazon group?

JC: As I said, that context is good justification. That's the argument you want to use.

    Next line, actually:

You can justify it with the execution, and explanation of how it happened, and if it was supposed to be stupid, but saying it's a joke does not cover it.

  • Well, while it might have problems due to funding or who knows what else, but the actual concept is not entirely about attracting men. A lot of it has to do with other woman.

If it's not to late to salvage this line of conversation: as I recall, points about women taking care of their appearance and the image they project were made on several occasions, and they raised a lot of the ideas you have.  At one point it was summed up with the line "not everything we do is about men". (Another was a woman saying she thought keeping her greying hair dyed would inspire her troops.) So I don't think the author is entirely oblivious here.

    AHR, Juan DID say that.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Vivi: Actually, yes. I did. I wasn't trying to say it wasn't sexist. I just felt like people thought that it was a serious sociological point the writer was trying to make.
  • ...I have no idea what you're trying to tell me, Vivi.

    "You
can justify it with the execution, and explanation of how it happened,
and if it was supposed to be stupid, but saying it's a joke does not
    cover it."

Juan explained multiple times with a reason that was NOT "it's a joke"

Abyss, I understood it as an attack on the JJJ, it's just that CC seemed too emotional at the time for the joke to not sound like there was an attempt to be insulting. The U MAD reaction picture seemed appropriate.

^^Hence why I wrote the explanation. Because people were using the justification.

Juan also used the explanation as well, when not trying to argue with it on a factual basis. The factual basis, as shown, is a bit shaky.

    What Gelzo said.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Still, Y the Last Man is a pretty awesome comic.
  • You can change. You can.
Nobody was using the justification. Malk was saying that it was a joke, meaning the author did not intend for it to be sociology commentary. Does not mean he didn't say it was sexist. I differ, of course.
  • But that's an inadequate explanation, as I just said.

Perhaps I should have been more in-depth with what I said, but I didn't expect a shitstorm to strike because of it.
  • It's really not the end of the world if a comic book where only one human male survives an extinction event has something take place that's a little unrealistic and could be perceived as sexist.
