If the Hyaas and grunts aren't enough to say that this is wrong, then what about how he says, "Come on!" to statues in Wind Waker? I highoy doubt a mute could say Come On

    He's not mute.  He just has no speech text because he's supposed to represent the player, and he's supposed to be saying what they think he is.  It's just he, and characters like him, have been commonly misinterpreted as being mute by, um, stupid people. >.>

    ^^ To be fair, I never imagine my characters saying anything that isn't explicitly stated since I don't give a shit, so for me, Link really is mostly mute.
