This word is starting to bug me. a certain user brought it up in a thread a while back and was correctly pointed out to him that what he defined as "Patriotism" was antithetical to liberty. this whole idea of being fo rced to salute the flag or learn a language or anything. Sure it can be seen as a form of respect but to me it's more often being used as a form of Nationalism. I think we all know how I feel about Nationalism.

Nowhere.
I think that in some ways, patriotism can be pretty good. I believe that when people work together using their nationality as a source of unity they can do great things. Going along with that idea, I feel like patriotism can help people feel like they fit in somewhere despite differences they may have. I also think that friendly competition between different countries can be very positive, especially when it encourages innovation and serves as a substitute for war.
That being said, I dislike the idea that the flag is sacred or that one should worship it or what have you. I also find it a bit strange for people to have to do things like say the pledge of allegiance and the like when in school. I understand that some use patriotism as a path to Nationalism as you mentioned, but as I said earlier, I do not believe that is necessarily what happens whenever one is patriotic.
