I cannot help but wonder if said rudeness was taken far more seriously because of the nature of the opinion it was based in. If Rott was in agreement with the majority, and was rude to a minority, then would he have gotten away unscathed?

Yes. Still, what he said (or at least my understanding of what he said, which is admittedly quite limited) was pretty screwed up.
