The term "slut" and equivalents
Why do we feel the need to denigrate people with higher-than-average sex drives?
Comments
Because they're getting a higher-than-average amount of tail than we are?
"I tend to see it used more against women who dress a certain way, not necessarily that they fuck a lot (in fact, at least one of my friends uses "slut" as a euphemism for "a chick who feels the need to dress like a hooker because she can't get laid otherwise"). "
And I normally see it used more against anyone who either dresses or certain way or is even remotely sexually active.
"I'd really, really prefer not to use the "THEY'RE JUST JEALOUS OF YOU GURL GO BE YOURSELF 'N SHIT" route, but that seems plausible..."
It does often seem like a sour grapes kind of thing.

I don't think it actually has anything to do with envy.
I don't think you've ever seen teenage girls pissed off at their friend for taking a single boy they like.
Sexually transmitted diseases. Pregnancy. Drama. Fraternization. There are plenty of reasons why unrestrained sexuality can be a bad thing. In an ideal world, we wouldn't have to worry about such things, but sadly we don't.
"I don't think you've ever seen teenage girls pissed off at their friend for taking a single boy they like."
You got me there. Teenage girls and I mix like oil in water, in the sense that we don't.
It also bothers me when people use those kinds of terms to put down women just as generic insults. I might just be oversensitive, but I think that words can truly hurt people so one should be careful when one uses them.
That being said, I think someone's personal sexual activity/interests are none of my business.
On that note, how did slut become one of the default insult terms for women?
My guess would be that typically prostitutes were considered the worst women in society (because of the perceived importance of virginity and chastity for women among other factors) and thus the term began to be used to say that a certain woman was just like those "bad people."
Of course, I could be wrong about that since my comment is basically just conjecture on my part.
