Why do we feel the need to denigrate people with higher-than-average sex drives?

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Society's values, although slut is more commonly applied to women, so more societies values that are biased against women's sexual freedom?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I tend to see it used more against women who dress a certain way, not necessarily that they fuck a lot (in fact, at least one of my friends uses "slut" as a euphemism for "a chick who feels the need to dress like a hooker because she can't get laid otherwise").

Okay then, why do we feel the need to denigrate people who dress a certain way?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Because they were women/sex is wrong/stuff like that?

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Because he's kind of a sexist.
  • Why do we feel the need to denigrate people with higher-than-average sex drives?

Because they're getting a higher-than-average amount of tail than we are?

I'd really, really prefer not to use the "THEY'RE JUST JEALOUS OF YOU GURL GO BE YOURSELF 'N SHIT" route, but that seems plausible...
  • Quit being a whiny bitch and man up.
A slut is a woman who'll fuck anyone, a bitch is a woman who'll fuck anyone but you.
  • "I tend to see it used more against women who dress a certain way, not necessarily that they fuck a lot (in fact, at least one of my friends uses "slut" as a euphemism for "a chick who feels the need to dress like a hooker because she can't get laid otherwise"). "

And I normally see it used more against anyone who either dresses or certain way or is even remotely sexually active.

"I'd really, really prefer not to use the "THEY'RE JUST JEALOUS OF YOU GURL GO BE YOURSELF 'N SHIT" route, but that seems plausible..."

It does often seem like a sour grapes kind of thing.

Why do we feel the need to denigrate people with higher-than-average sex drives?

Because good ole fashioned American / biblical values and blah blah blah.

Unless they're men, then it's cool.

  • I don't really think anyone, male or female, should be promiscious.
  • I consider a slut to be someone (either sex) who will fuck anyone that is human (some exceptions exist, like those who commit beastiality.) Since most humans with ridiculously high sexual desire/lack of standards to care that are in first world countries won't fuck ANYONE(at least I believe they will usually look for someone who is actually safe to have sex with, someone who properly uses a condom, or isn't infected with some serious disease, or whatever) I also consider those who will basically fuck anyone who is relatively safe to do it with is also a slut. I don't consider someone who cheats on their (decent or better) boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse a slut, but I still don't consider that person a decent one.

As for why the word is so often used, especially on women, is likely because we still aren't at a hyper-liberal world college, which causes people to care too much about the morals they learned as they were raised.
  • Glaives are better.
As much as I'm opposed to sexual repression in principle, the denigration of people with higher sex drives serves a biological purpose; it helps control population growth, limits the possibility of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and helps productivity (because honestly, if no one had inhibitions, nothing would ever get done). Additionally, it helps establish group cohesion, as deviation from the group's set of behavioral rules gets discouraged.

I don't think it actually has anything to do with envy.

That's not really a realistic expectation of anyone. No one is going to fuck any and every "safe" person they see. Please, please tell me you're being hyperbolic.

"it helps control population growth, limits the possibility of sexually transmitted diseases and infections"

Two things that are also easily controlled / limited by condoms.

"and helps productivity (because honestly, if no one had inhibitions, nothing would ever get done)."

Good point, but usually one doesn't necessarily need to be promiscuous to the point of not doing anything productive / having absolutely no inhibitions to be labeled a slut.

"I don't think it actually has anything to do with envy."

I don't think you've ever seen teenage girls pissed off at their friend for taking a single boy they like.

^ if no one wants to, then no one is a slut.

Okay then, why is wanting to fuck anyone that is human a bad thing?
  • From my point of view or objectively?

    Both.

^^^^So you're saying to be a slut, you have to want to fuck everyone you see that isn't related to you and is willing to use a condom?
  • Glaives are better.

"Okay then, why is wanting to fuck anyone that is human a bad thing?"

Sexually transmitted diseases. Pregnancy. Drama. Fraternization. There are plenty of reasons why unrestrained sexuality can be a bad thing. In an ideal world, we wouldn't have to worry about such things, but sadly we don't.

"I don't think you've ever seen teenage girls pissed off at their friend for taking a single boy they like."

You got me there. Teenage girls and I mix like oil in water, in the sense that we don't.

But who, realistically, would actually want to fuck anyone who is human? Since when do people like that exist?

    Fictional characters don't count.

Not everyone, anyone. And also with a desire to do it very frequently(doesn't have to be with the same person obviously), also I never set the condition of "isn't related to you." Willing to use a condom depends on how safe the rest of the person is (again, if the person is too dangerous to have sex with, then even the typical slut will refuse.)

^ There's definitely people who at least have fantasies of it.
  • That's the thing. Not many people would fuck anyone. It's not like anyone who isn't asexual has no standards.
  • Which is why I said that if there is no one who wants to, there are no sluts.

    Loser
I see no real reason to insult people based on something as private as their level of sexual activity. I think it is fair to say that recklessly engaging in sexual activity has clear consequences, but name calling or denigrating people seems completely unnecessary to me (just as unnecessary as ostracizing pregnant teenagers in my view) and rather childish. Like basically every pejorative, I think the term in question should have no legitimate use.

It also bothers me when people use those kinds of terms to put down women just as generic insults. I might just be oversensitive, but I think that words can truly hurt people so one should be careful when one uses them.

That being said, I think someone's personal sexual activity/interests are none of my business.
  • On that note, how did slut become one of the default insult terms for women?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Because cunt is still rude to say in public.

    Bob,
On that note, how did slut become one of the default insult terms for women?

My guess would be that typically prostitutes were considered the worst women in society (because of the perceived importance of virginity and chastity for women among other factors) and thus the term began to be used to say that a certain woman was just like those "bad people."

Of course, I could be wrong about that since my comment is basically just conjecture on my part.

Yes, but at least insults for men usually actually refer to said male's actions (at least from what I've seen). For example, a guy being exceptionally rude will probably be called an asshole or a dick. When a woman gets called slut for something that has nothing to do with sex is just stupid.

^Kind of makes sense, but it still doesn't make too much sense to me (if that even made sense).

    Has friends besides tanks now
^^ Makes more sense than my answer, which would be that "bitch" isn't harsh enough, and so it's easier to pick on someone on the basis of something that people really shouldn't care so much about because they care so much about it.
  • I will never understand why cunt is more rude than slut.
