I suck at learning languages.

edited 2011-06-27 22:43:50 in General
This bugs the crap out of me because I have a desire to learn German at least for the purpos of utility because the country I want to move to speaks German as a primary language.  I've never been able to grasp the finer points of syntax.

Comments

  • Moi, la honté me da des problèmes au moment de practicer, et je ne suis pas bon au la grammaire (sauf en français, parce-que il est pareil au espagnol).
  • I seem to be strangely good at learning languages. I have no idea why.

  • L'allemand est bien, mais vous devriez essayer d'apprendre le swahili.
  • The only reason i'm opting for German first is because of it's utility and the place I want to move to speeks German as a primary language. ideally i'd learn latin first.

    Loser
    Tnu1138,

I hear you and you are definitely not alone here when it comes to this. I think one can feel even worse going to someplace like TV Tropes and realizing that while you cannot even speak more than one language, that not only can other people speak two, but that those who are non-native English speakers/writers can actually write English better than you can. I think that can make one feel pretty inferior, but that might just be me.

I suppose that learning languages is not everyone's area of expertise though.
  • I can't figure out languages either.
Or at least not P2P languages. I can learn programming languages easily enough.  Why can't all languages be more like programming languages?

  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I hear ya man. Knowing only one language makes me feel like an incomplete person, but learning a new one... just... sometimes the difficulty makes me want to put a bullet to my brain, hoping that the stupid parts of it will regrow into something more useful.

Of course, if that were how reality worked, we'd all be doing it, but still.
