Seriously, it's really annoying.

  • My parent's do this all the time. I really, really hate it when they do it, because they can use their authority to silence any dissent.
  • Indeed. Not saying that it can't happen - people do have difficulty understanding themselves, and some things are more easy to notice from outside. But what annoys this one s when people refuse to accept the information other people give about their feelings and claim that they are lying and/or in denial. Especially if it is used to discredit someone's position, gain power or "win" an argument.

There's also the ones claiming that people who lead X lifestyle are unhappy and unfulfilled, because they lack Y property that's required to be happy. Or something.
  • Ohhhhh, yes!!!! That is so very annoying, and rather weird. Happiness is subjective. The most this one could say is that she would not be happy leading an X lifestyle.

    "You aren't happy, are you?"

    "I am happy. Seriously."

"You don't look like you are happy though..."

    "...but I am?"

    "...no...you don't..."
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Not always the case, but it happens.
  • I find rather frequently that other people recognize my neuroses a lot more clearly I do.

That doesn't really apply when the thing we're talking about is necessarily internal.
  • It is one  think to  listen to one's input and figure out one's mental state.  Nothing wrong with that. But when people start to assume that they know better  what should  be  on one's  mind and blatantly disregard what they are told if it contradicts their  idea, then it is quite annoying. And useless.

    - I'm feeling X and Y
    - Looks like you are in X state

    Ok

    -I'm feeling X and in Y state
-No you aren't! If you are in Y state, you are actually  feeling Z deep  down inside!
    - Umm, but I don't!
    -You do! Don't deny it!
-Seriously, I've  told you. Right now I'm X and perfectly Y
-You are lying to yourself. Z is a  necessary component for Y. You are in denial!

    Now that is wrong.

That and the self is a very biased source, prone to being affected by narcissism or inferiority complexes. Of course, most external sources lack the experience to analyze a person as well. Or in the case of many psychiatrists, they couldn't be arsed as long as they get their paycheque.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
The topic pretty much describes my ex. Sweet and warm when she was in a good mood but infuriatingly condescending when she wanted to make a point.

    This movie.

It is this thing in a shitton of different ways.
  • This reminds me of a documentary I saw on people who get tattoos that really pissed me off.

This professor guy or whatever was making blanket statements like "All people who get tattoos are subconsciously rebelling against something in their past. They might say 'well no, because I'd be aware of it', but the thing is it's subconscious, so they are whether they know it or not!"

Right, and there's no one that just wants to get some rad ink. e___e I was left seriously wondering what the fuck kind of psych professor he was making outrageous all-encompassing statements like that.

    TV academics are like that.
