What it was actually designed to do was to minimize the frequency of a letter being immediately followed by a letter next to it, as that was causing early prototype versions with an alphabetical-order keyboard to jam a lot.

@OP: For some reasob, I bever boticed that nefore.

^For modern computers, the Dvorak keyboard is more efficient. But because most experienced typists are trained only for querty, it is rarely used.

Just remember to mind your P's and Q's. The two letters were often reversed in early typesettings so it was easy to get them confused.
