Hating a genre but loving select things in said genre

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
It's rather odd.

For example, I hate romantic comedies more than any other genre of movie, but I consider City Lights and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to be two of the finest films ever made.

  • Stupid Megaman Manga...
  • You can change. You can.
Manga is not a genre. Tis a medium.

    Sorta. It's complicated.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
Manga it's not a medium. It's a foreign word for "comic"
  • You can change. You can.
Then it is a medium, as comics are, you know, a medium. They're just not separate from comics.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Yeah, but then you get into the whole anime/animation thing and it's just not worth anyone's time.

    Anyway, I hate that medium.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
So do I. Except for the Lucky Star manga.

The joke is that there is no Lucky Star manga.
  • Yes there is?
  • Kichigai birthday!!
I would say it's a joke because the Lucky Star manga is very bad and people try to ignore it,but I've never heard that before
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Maybe it's a joke on a joke?
  • I assume there must be an actual joke somewhere...

I just can't tell what it is...
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
@DYRE re "I assume there must be an actual joke somewhere": Enjoy.
  • I love the Anime medium.

I hate how it's become a market to push cure girls to sweaty Otaku.

I hate how I lap this shit up anyway.

  • I just realized that the only anime that I know Chagen has watched are Gurren Lagann and Strike Witches.

Though I guess that doesn't matter.

Anyway, I am completely fine with anime being all about moeblobs.
  • I've seen a lot of series, I just never finish them.
  • >For example, I hate romantic comedies more than any other genre of movie, but I consider City Lights and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to be two of the finest films ever made.

One of those is a deconstruction of the genre, and the other is, well, Charlie Chaplin. It's little wonder you like these more than the rest.

How about 500 days of summer? Or Annie Hall?

also, remember that romantic comedies weren't always the cheesy, unfunny fluff we're getting these days.

God, Annie Hall. That movie is like if you rolled everything that was wrong with late 1970's filmmaking and intellectualism up into one giant, putrid cigar, and then then smoked it by setting some of the footage from the cutting room on fire and using that as a match.

    I much prefer Manhattan.

    I liked Annie Hall. ._____.

    Why didn't you like it?

IIRC, the movie was originally supposed to be a murder mystery with the romance as a side plot, but he ended up cutting the murder mystery out to focus on the romance instead. So basically, it's a side plot stretched into a full-length production, and that's exactly what it feels like.

The bits go on for way too long, the majority of the writing basically amounts to Woody Allen throwing words like "Freud" and "Bergman" at the wall every 10 seconds to see what sticks, and there's an unbelievable lack of focus running through the whole thing.

I don't suppose you've seen Manhattan? Now there's the movie that should've beaten Star Wars at the Oscars.

I dunno, I didn't feel as if I was watching an incomplete movie.

Also, it's true that the movie uses a lot of other people's philosophical standpoints in order to properly explain Alvy/Woody's psyche, but I didn't think it was particularl bad. It does feel like a philosophical/psychological essay, though, and I can see how it can make people feel weird.

I mostly liked it for the metanarrative, though. Although the movie barely holds up to me. I prefer his slapstick stuff like Bananas and Love and Death
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Never seen either of those movies.
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
    Love and Death was hilarious.

Midnight in Paris was actually really good, too. It felt like an arts-oriented Hark! A Vagrant sketch.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
    Happens to me sometimes.

Hate sports games but love NBA Jam and Tournament Edition. Hate western comics but love Thundermace and Chakan the Forever Man. Hate western animation but... well okay I can't finish this line with a straight face. and of course, hate Superheroes but love Marvel for some insane reason.
