MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Also, they can be failures, but I think the ones we usually see in all fiction and not just anime lack a good deal of humanity, insecurity, and general good-naturedness that could make them likable.

Fry from Futurama is a good example of a failure character that's still likable.

^How do you feel about Bioware games?
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
Can I guess DYRE plays with female sheppard?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Mass Effect had no gay options. Laaaame.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Yeah. Success is not inexorably linked with likeable-ness, as often showed by media portraying successful people as dislikeable.

It's just, harem anime- and media in general- seem so focused on making the character a Nice Guy that they forget to make them a nice guy, which is what makes them... nice guys, people you can relate to.
  • a little muffled
    @Malkavian:
^Dude the whole crux of Book 1 was Haruhi being jealous Kyon was paying
attention to Mikuru. Book 4 is all about how much Yuki wants to be with
Kyon and older Mikuru pretty much says 'I wanted to fuck you but I can't
    because of time paradox.'
Well, fair enough, but I don't think having a ton of UST makes it a harem series either.
  • How do you feel about Bioware games?

1.) They're more obviously video games so I can't bring myself to care about the story as much

2.) I don't think they're fun enough for me to get into the story anyway.

From what I've seen of my brother playing through Mass Effect and Dragon Age though, I think that would bother me slightly less for the most part since it doesn't come across quite so much like the protagonist is actually supposed to be the player.

  • You can change. You can.
It bears mentioning that Shepard's personality only comes in three modes and it's not like the player really chooses the three of them based on what they would do so much as what benefits them the most.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
My favorite moment in Mass Effect 2 was getting Renegade points for saying it was good that serial killers were in jail.

^^ Well yeah, there's that too.  Same reason that it didn't bug me in Persona 4.  Admittedly, visual novels are pretty much the same way (usually you're choosing particular decisions because you want a certain ending, not really because that's what you'd do IRL), but just the fact that there are game mechanics that everything ties into kind of changes things for me.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Well if there weren't they wouldn't be visual novels.

(Has never played a visual novel)

I see that people do this all the time, and i can understand taking lots of different options each playthrough for the sake of replayability, but I can't make roleplays for the sake of benefits, in fire emblem I don't do supports for the sake of stats bonus, but for the sake of tru wuv or good friendships.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
In Persona I kind of felt the bonus social links were piddling. I hung out with the characters because I found them the most interesting.

Though in 4, Chie's ability to punt people into the sky Team Rocket-style did make a difference.

but I can't make roleplays for the sake of benefits,

As for me, I find it completely impossible to try to make decisions in games from a roleplaying perspective.  It's either completely mechanical, or occasionally aesthetic, but pretty much never roleplaying.

^ The bonuses for maxing out the social links for your party members were actually pretty good, since it affected what elements they were weak/resistant/etc. to.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Oh yeah, I know, but fortunately they were interesting enough that I would have done it anyways.
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
I play a role to advance the story in a way I want, as in I almost always play Fallout 3/NV as a goody-two-shoes because that's the kind of person I want to be. The bonuses and perks I get are almost always limited by this, but I don't care.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Slightly back on topic, does anybody else watch occasional harem anime despite protagonists because they find certain other characters amusing enough?
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
The already mentioned Kurumu and Mizore, which other harem did I ever watch? Ah...Sekirei, for the sake of most of the other , a lot funnier, supporting Ashikabi characters.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
^^ I mostly watched HotD for Hirano, does that count?

Other than Haruhi, I can't really think of any other harem anime I've watched off the top of my head.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^I'd say so.

Because this is generally the reason I end up watching harem anime, and lots of other anime too...

I'd argue that even those decisions are made with a benefit in mind. In this case, purely based on what story you would like to see.

A real roleplaying choice in a videogame, I think, is a choice that is based not in what it unlocks or what storyline you would follow, but simply a choice. It's why I think only GTA IV's choice have gotten there in terms of the whole Morality study in gaming, as they don't have a consequence towards your whole game experience.

Either that or make the results of said choices less obvious, I suppose.
  • Doesn't everyone who watches harem anime do so because they like the characters who aren't the protagonist?  Isn't that kind of the point?
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
  • You can change. You can.
no, go eat a cock. >:|
  • They're somethin' else.
ok, what about Tenchi? Does that anime fall into the same traps? It was pre-Akamatsu.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    why so spanglish, juan :3c
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^Yes. In fact, it was the first show that frutstrated me for its uninteresting protagonist, though I watched it because it was on Toonami and I was twelve.

He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
    FUCK IT!
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
If that were the case, then I can say that every choice ever is based on benefits, now, I can then add that when I mean benefits, I mean gameplay benefits. You can chew me out if you feel like it. Also, I didn't mean just roleplaying in videogames, but in roleplays in general, I will try to guide the story towards a specific direction within the limits of my character's abilities.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Moving back to Roasario Vampire I just saw the episode which has Scream, Chucky, Freddy, and Jason references all at once. Dammit, I really wish this show were actually good. >_>
