"You're not really a gamer."
Oh fuck you. I play video games. Just because I don't play some title on the NES does not mean I suddenly do not have this hobby.

"Right. I play interactive media experiences."
That's a trend I dislike about video games, but that's just me.
^It annoys me, but if we want gaming to be accepted as art form, me new need pretentious beard-strokers.
Wha-- wait, you're thinking about all those times I said I get high, right? Hey! Don't jump to conclusions! I play games while I'm high!
... Does this mean I need to stop shaving?
I'd help out, but I really don't care who is right in that argument since "art" is yet another word that can mean anything and therefore means nothing.
I didn't want to sleep tonight anyways.
Let's not forget 90% of everything is crap and that will be true of gaming no matter what shifts it goes through.
Yeah I don't want every company to be like SquareEnix either.
Keep in mind that nobody held a gun to those kids heads and forced them to play. They did it because they enjoyed it.
And I can't blame 'em one bit. In fact when I have to access higher parts of my consciousness to beat Vega then that's "art" right there.
And for every Castlevania or Street Fighter 2's, there were five games that were simply obtuse.
Whenever I get the hardware to record such a thing, you can bet you'll get one.
In that respect, I'll agree. A lot of my favorite games are actually piss-easy (namely the RPGs).
Anyway, artfaggy games are cool and I enjoy them. At least in principle. Most of them suck, but most of anything sucks I guess.
The idea that the way to make your game more meaningful is to make it more like a movie (telling story exclusively through cutscenes, replacing gameplay with quicktime events) is kind of silly and is something I'd rather see games move away from (at least in general, not really all games), so I'm not a huge fan of games being highly story-driven, currently. Not to say I don't like such games, but I think it's not a very good use of the medium.
And anyway yeah, I agree that there's no reason all games should be forced into one particular type.
Really, I would take that as a compliment.
I kind of agree with this, but I wonder if it is actually its own sort of elitism (i.e. the idea that being a gamer is a bad thing).
That being said, is there any actual reason to be considered a "real gamer" or is this just more of a name-calling thing? If it is the latter, then I agree that it is pretty silly to care about dividing people into "real gamers" and "fake gamers" since all it does is just marginalize people in a fairly arbitrary way. If it is the former, then I would be interested in hearing the benefits of being able to claim that one was actually a "gamer."
On a somewhat related note, why does anyone really need recognition from others about their hobbies? I mean, sure it is probably nice to not be considered a total outcast because of one's hobbies, but I think the distinction is being made here by people in the same fandom so it does not even have that potential impact.

Don't mind me. I'm just being bitter and disillusioned.
V Yeah, that was stupid. (hey, wait a minute....)
