The Concept of Having to Pay Of Medical Care

edited 2011-07-17 06:24:56 in General
Is so unbelievably foreign to me. It seems disgusting that in certain places people are actually expected to hand over money for treatment. Hell, I was in England recently, and found it so strange to even have to pay a cursory amount for a prescription as in Scotland you get prescriptions for free.

So yeah, paying for medical care just bugs me.

Oh no. People are expected to pay for service in some places. How unexpected.
  • When the people are healthy Cygan, The people are profitable.

    > When the people are well-fed, they are profitable.

One essential is covered, while others are not.

It really doesn't surprise me that some don't bother to cover one.
  • But people don't need to be well-fed to be profitable actually.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
No, but they do need to be able to eat. By 'well-fed', I mean 'not starving'.
  • and getting to the condition of "Not-Starving" is actually easier than getting to the condition of "having enough money to pay for medical care"

Especially when you need medical care in the first place to get enough money to be able to afford medical care.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Not these days it's not.

-shrug- You need food to survive. It's an essential item.

You don't need healthcare to survive.

    Belief
I'm not saying food isn't essential,

    Link.

I'm just saying that in relative comparison

    Link

Healthcare is harder to come by.

And not to be insulting, but if you think not being able to sustain a job because of some illness or injury or sickness is surviving, you're right...

But the point was, You're going to turn a lot more of a profit(In other areas) from healthy individuals than you would from the sick and crippled who can't get jobs.

"You don't need healthcare to survive."

For those select few who possess the predisposition to avoid diseases and debilitating injuries. The rest of us (e.g. Stephen Hawking) would be severely handicapped without it.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    inb4you are paying through taxes.

I feel the same as the Conductor, it seems a strange concept that people end up paying a huge amount of money up front for their healthcare.

This is obviously due to being brought up in a culture where universal healthcare is seen more a right than in other cultures.

But it's not necessary. It's not an inherent necessity that you will die, guaranteed, without.

Well it does depend on the people, for some having affordable health care to survive is a necessity.

Yeah, but everyone will die without food.

In a world with no medical care everyone would also die.
    /trollface

Seriously though without healthcare there would a huge increase in deaths as only a few people would be lucky enough to never get ill.
  • You can change. You can.
    I'm sure you mean without...

There wasn't healthcare back in medieval times, really :/

    ^^
Yes I did and corrected now :), second time today you've corrected me :o

    ^
High death rate, plagues and lower standards of living would mean a huge increase in the death rate, which is what I said.
Humanity wouldn't (and didn't) die out but it would be a lot shittier.

    -shrug-

All I can say is, everybody's complaining about some countries not having free healthcare because people die.

But nobody ever complains about countries not having free food, ignoring how many people in medieval times suffered from lack of food and famines, and even nowadays people still die of starvation/malnourishment.
  • Probably because for most people, food is easier to come by than medicine.

Not that I'm taking a side either way, I just think that might be the logic.

    ^^
Why not make an IJBM thread about it then?

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Because it doesn't really bug me.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Don't a lot of countries have free food? The U.S. sure does.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Not particularly. Most countries that have free food have it because of organizations like Red Cross.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, yeah, but they do have it.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
And some organizations (St Vincent De Pauls in Australia) will also cover medical costs for you if you can't afford it.

    Ooh also:
Basic welfare for unemployed is there to provide living allowance basically = given money for food/bills etc.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Given money for food/bills/medical expenses, really :C
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Well not really medical expenses technically, as you don't pay up front for the medical treatment or prescriptions if you are unemployed.
    Well over here at least.

I have no idea about the welfare/healthcare system in Australia.

We have Medicare here. It pays for the majority of the expense, but not all of it.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Ok, so subsidised healthcare.

What is the welfare system like?
